Preoccupation A

Exercise Intermediate 15 min 2–2

Description

In this exercise, two players sit in the same environment, deeply focused on their individual thoughts. One player is vocal and expressive about their concerns, while the other remains silent and absorbed in their own issues.
The exercise showcases how individuals can be present with each other while still being absorbed in their own worlds. The verbal player continuously shares their preoccupation, while the silent player engages minimally, only responding when necessary to maintain the relationship and activity.

Setup Requirements

Seating arrangement like a restaurant or shared seat on a train.

Point of Concentration

Players to be preoccupied with their own thoughts while using objects in the environment.

Side Coaching

  • Encourage players to maintain their individual preoccupations while interacting.
  • Remind them to involve each other only during moments of shared activity.
  • Ensure they stay engaged with their environment, passing objects or responding to requests.

Points of Observation

  • Watch for how players involve each other at random moments.
  • Ensure they maintain their individual preoccupations rather than focusing solely on each other.
  • Monitor that the activity remains central, preventing the scene from becoming too introspective.

Evaluation

  • Did players maintain their individual preoccupations?
  • How effectively did they engage with their environment?
  • What moments created an organic connection between the players without overt communication?

Examples

Example setting: A restaurant with two women friends.
  • A shares her ongoing problem with a boyfriend.
  • B is quietly preoccupied with a personal issue, responding to A only when directly engaged.
