Shadowing

Exercise Intermediate 20 min 4–10

Description

In this exercise, participants are divided into two sub-teams. Sub-team A performs a scene while sub-team B shadows them. Everyone is aware of the floorplan, and shadows provide continuous comments to the actors.
This exercise is designed for players with some experience and should only be done after several months of training, with repetitions at varying intervals.

Setup Requirements

A spacious area for the scene, props as needed to suggest the floorplan.

Point of Concentration

on the Where, Who, and What.

Side Coaching

  • Remind shadows to stay close and speak quietly.
  • Encourage shadows to focus on enhancing the physical reality of the scene.
  • Instruct players to avoid directing the action.

Points of Observation

  • Watch for shadows providing insightful comments without taking over the scene.
  • Ensure shadows are commenting on physical objects and actions rather than directing the actors.
  • Monitor the tone; stop the exercise if it turns overly dramatic.

Evaluation

  • What did the shadows contribute to the actors' performance?
  • How did the comments enhance the scene's reality?
  • Were there moments where shadows inadvertently directed the action?

Examples

  • Where—bedroom. Who—husband and wife. What—getting dressed to go out.
  • "Do you see the brown flecks in her eyes?"
  • "Why don’t you help her zip up her dress?"
