SILENT SCREAM

Exercise Beginner 15 min 5–20

Description

In this exercise, students will explore how to express emotion physically. The group will practice screaming without making sound, focusing on using their bodies to convey emotion.

Setup Requirements

A spacious area for the group to be seated and move around safely.

Point of Concentration

Physical expression of emotion

Side Coaching

  • Encourage students to scream with their toes, eyes, back, and stomach.
  • Remind them to engage their whole body.
  • Wait for them to respond physically before calling for a vocal scream.

Points of Observation

  • Watch for genuine physical engagement versus acting.
  • Note which students use their whole body versus just their faces.
  • Identify students who may hold back due to self-protection.

Evaluation

  • How did you feel using your body to express emotion?
  • What was different between the silent scream and the vocal scream?
  • Did you notice any hesitations or barriers? Why do you think that was?

Examples

Examples of body engagement:
  • Screaming through your fingertips
  • Screaming with your heart
  • Screaming from the ground up
