Silent Tension

Exercise Intermediate 15 min 2–4

Description

In this exercise, two or more players engage in a scene where communication is conveyed solely through silence. The players agree upon the setting (Where), characters (Who), and situation (What) without using any dialogue. The aim is to express the tension and emotions present in the scene through non-verbal cues.

Setup Requirements

Open space for players to perform without distractions.

Point of Concentration

Intense involvement through silence.

Side Coaching

  • Encourage strong eye contact between players.
  • Remind players that silence can be powerful and expressive.
  • Use of body language and facial expressions is key.
  • Call out 'Give and take!' to maintain engagement.

Points of Observation

  • Observe the dramatic tension and engagement between players.
  • Watch for effective use of silence and physicality.
  • Identify moments of connection or emotional shift.

Evaluation

  • Did the players convey the setting, characters, and situation without words?
  • Was the scene engaging and full of tension?

Examples

  • Scene in a restaurant: Two sweethearts who have just broken their engagement.
  • Scene in a bedroom: A dying old man, his son, and daughter-in-law waiting for him to pass.
  • Scene in a mining area: Families anxiously waiting for news of missing miners.
