SPACE SUBSTANCE

Exercise Intermediate 45 min 6–20

Description

SPACE SUBSTANCE focuses on exploring the concept of space as a tangible substance. Participants move around the space, creating and interacting with imaginary objects. The exercise starts with warming up by giving substance to invisible elements and then evolves into individual and group tasks that enhance creativity and spatial awareness.
Sessions should be repeated regularly to improve participants' ability to create and manipulate space dynamics.

Setup Requirements

A large, open performance space with no obstacles.

Point of Concentration

To build an object from space substance.

Side Coaching

  • Encourage players to fully engage with the imagined substance.
  • Remind them to use their entire body to feel and manipulate space.
  • Promote exploration without naming or categorizing the substances.
  • Ask players to lean on and be supported by the space around them.

Points of Observation

  • Watch how players' confidence changes when they interact with the space.
  • Notice the physical differences in body language when supported vs unsupported.
  • Look for emotional expressions and character qualities during the exercise.

Evaluation

  • What feelings arose when interacting with the space as support?
  • Did you notice a difference in movement when leaning on space compared to self-support?
  • For audience: Did you perceive changes in players' expressions and movements?

Examples

  • Imagine pulling a giant elastic band through the space.
  • Create a wall and then push against it.
  • Form a chair and take a seat on it, feeling the support.
