Using Objects to Evolve Scenes A

Exercise Beginner 15 min 1–1

Description

This exercise helps actors focus on simple objects, promoting intuitive scene development. The player sits quietly on stage while a teacher-director whispers the name of an object. The goal is to allow concentration on the object to inspire motion and action.
Possible object categories include:
  • vegetation (growth)
  • desk
  • fireplace
  • window
  • doors
  • light
  • a place to sit
  • box (container)
  • weapon

Setup Requirements

A quiet stage space for the player to sit comfortably.

Point of Concentration

on the object, which then sets player in motion.

Side Coaching

  • Encourage actors to keep their eyes open and view the stage while concentrating.
  • Remind them not to rush; focus on exhaling and letting the object inspire action.
  • Look for creativity in how the object is interpreted. Challenge mundane uses.

Points of Observation

  • Observe if the player remains focused on the object without distraction.
  • Monitor the evolution of their actions from the object.
  • Note if the scenes develop into fantasy or dramatic moments versus mundane activities.

Evaluation

  • To the actor: Did you wait quietly for inspiration or plan verbally before acting?
  • To the audience: Was the object's use imaginative or ordinary?

Examples

  • A player focused on a 'fireplace' might evoke dramatic flames rising or simply adjust logs.
  • A 'box' could inspire a character's treasure or a trap.
