Vocal Sound Effects

Exercise Beginner 20 min 2–10

Description

In this exercise, participants create sound effects using only their voices. They will not use recorded sounds or mechanical devices, focusing instead on vocalizations that represent various environmental noises.
Players will work together, experimenting with different vocal techniques to create effects such as birds, wind, sirens, and bells.

Setup Requirements

A space where players can be hidden from the audience and access to microphones if available.

Point of Concentration

Produce sounds vocally without mechanical aids.

Side Coaching

  • Encourage players to explore a variety of vocal sounds.
  • Remind them to think about how sounds relate to the environment.
  • Emphasize teamwork in building a soundscape together.

Points of Observation

  • Listen for creativity in vocal sounds.
  • Observe how well players work together to build an atmosphere.
  • Note the effectiveness of their sounds compared to typical recordings.

Evaluation

  • Were the vocal sounds as effective as recorded sounds?
  • How did teamwork influence the overall sound creation?
  • What vocal techniques were most successful?

Examples

  • Player A mimics a train whistle while Player B adds the sound of a crowd.
  • Players create a jungle scene with birds and rustling leaves.
  • One player sounds a siren while others engage in a street scene.
