What's Beyond? A

Exercise Beginner 15 min 1–1

Description

In this solo exercise, the player conveys their journey between rooms using movement without dialogue or action beyond necessary indications. The stage represents a hallway, primarily transitioning between doors.

Setup Requirements

Open stage area for movement, optional props to suggest different rooms.

Point of Concentration

To show what room he has come from and what room he is going to.

Side Coaching

  • Encourage clear physicality to indicate the character’s actions.
  • Focus on facial expressions to enhance storytelling.
  • Have the player use props effectively to suggest different environments.

Points of Observation

  • Watch how clearly the player communicates the rooms they are leaving and entering.
  • Note the creativity in their physical movements and how they utilize space.
  • Observe how props might enhance the clarity of the journey.

Evaluation

  • What room did the actor come from and what room did they go to?
  • Did they effectively show or tell us about these spaces?
  • Can this concept be expressed without much physical activity?

Examples

  • A character briskly walks on stage, wipes their hands, hangs a towel on a doorknob, puts on a hat, checks their reflection, and exits.
  • A twelve-year-old character yawns, stretches, and removes a garment while walking across the stage, then exits through another door.
