Description

In this individual exercise, the player reflects on events that occurred off stage after leaving their last scene. The focus is on creating a vivid backstory based on their previous setting.

Setup Requirements

Open space for a single performer to move comfortably.

Point of Concentration

Suggest what went on in the place off stage.

Side Coaching

  • Encourage players to keep it simple when starting out.
  • Prompt them to build complexity as they progress in the session.

Points of Observation

  • Look for clarity in the backstory being constructed.
  • Note how the player connects their offstage scene to their current performance.

Evaluation

  • What happened off stage?
  • How did the past influence the present action?

Examples

Examples of offstage events include:
  • Shoveling snow off the driveway.
  • A quarrel with a partner.
  • Stealing a purse.
  • A dramatic death scene.
