Changing Emotion

Exercise Intermediate 30 min 1–1

Description

This exercise focuses on changing inner emotions while performing the same physical activity. The student-actor completes an initial activity, then must reverse it using the same objects with a different emotional response.
The goal is to demonstrate how feelings can alter physical actions, showing a clear transition from one emotion to another, even when the activity remains the same.

Setup Requirements

Space for performing the activity and available objects relevant to the task (e.g., dress, makeup).

Point of Concentration

Physicalizing emotion or feeling through the objects.

Side Coaching

  • Encourage deeper inner actions.
  • Physicalize that thought!

Points of Observation

  • The same activity must be completed identically before and after the emotional shift.
  • Ensure that the emotional change influences the physical handling of objects.
  • Watch for the physical expression of emotions beyond facial expressions.

Evaluation

  • Was the activity identical before and after the emotional turning point?
  • How did the feeling of pleasure influence the physical actions?
  • What physical changes occur with disappointment?

Examples

Example Activity: A girl prepares for a dance.
  • First Inner Action: Pleasure from looking forward to the event.
  • Second Inner Action: Disappointment after learning the dance is canceled.
