Where Homework Exercise

Exercise Intermediate 60 min 2–4

Description

This exercise focuses on how physical spaces can influence character actions and dialogue. Each student creates a floorplan at home based on a setting, concentrating on how it will be used by characters. They plan for two characters and create a script for a three-minute scene. In class, students share their floorplans and scripts, with group members performing the scenes.

Setup Requirements

Space for each student to set up their floorplan and perform their scenes.

Point of Concentration

All dialogue and action must interact with physical objects.

Side Coaching

  • Encourage interaction with physical objects.
  • Focus on how the environment affects the characters.
  • Allow the scene to develop organically based on the space.

Points of Observation

  • Watch for how players use objects to generate action.
  • Observe if the actions seem imposed or natural to the setting.
  • Ensure actors focus on the environment before initiating dialogue.

Evaluation

  • Did actions stem from the environment or were they imposed?
  • How effectively did players use physical objects to convey their story?
  • Did the setting inspire the scene or did it feel forced?

Examples

Example scenarios include:
  • A boy knocks on a door, prompting a girl inside to respond.
  • Characters go about their routines while interacting with their environment.
