Description

In this exercise, a single performer creates a scene using three specific objects provided. The focus is on how these objects can establish a setting and communicate a clear location to the audience.

Setup Requirements

Three objects that can represent a setting (e.g., juke box, greasy spoon restaurant items).

Point of Concentration

Building a scene using three selected objects.

Side Coaching

  • Encourage performers to think creatively about how each object contributes to the scene.
  • Remind them to maintain coherence in their environment with the chosen objects.

Points of Observation

  • Watch for how well the objects are integrated into the scene.
  • Note if the performer effectively communicates the location to the audience.
  • Be alert for any lapse into unrelated activity.

Evaluation

  • Did the three objects create a believable setting?
  • Was the scene clearly identifiable as a greasy spoon restaurant?
  • How effectively did the performer engage the audience with the objects?

Examples of objects include a juke box, a diner menu, and a telephone booth.
