In this exercise, teams of players use a set list of identical props and furniture to create scenes. The focus is on how the objects inform the action and dialogue, rather than imposing a pre-decided scenario.
Setup Requirements
A selection of identical props and furniture items for each team.
Point of Concentration
to let the objects (set pieces) create the scene.
Side Coaching
Encourage players to explore how the props can influence their actions.
Remind players to stay open to new ideas generated by the objects.
Suggest focusing on interaction with set pieces rather than forced dialogue.
Points of Observation
Ensure all teams have a chance to perform before evaluating.
Watch for moments where props inspire new scenes rather than simply being background.
Observe players' engagement with the objects and how they use them creatively.
Evaluation
Did teams use the objects to write a scenario, or did the objects themselves create the scene?
How distinct were the scenes developed by different teams?
Did the props, like the fire escape, inspire unique interpretations or were they merely decorative?
Examples
Using the 'window to a fire escape' to create a dramatic exit.
Using a 'pull-down bed' as a centerpiece of a late-night conversation.
Opening a 'door to the outside' to signify new beginnings.
