In this exercise, one player communicates information solely through different types of knocks. The audience must guess who the player is, where they are, and other contextual details based on the sounds they produce.
Setup Requirements
A space where one player can knock out of sight from the audience.
Point of Concentration
on knocking; to show Who, Where, and What, through knocking.
Side Coaching
Encourage players to think about the context behind each knock.
Suggest varying the rhythm and intensity of knocks.
Remind players to stay in character while knocking.
Points of Observation
Are players clearly expressing their character through knocking?
Is the audience engaged and guessing correctly?
How well do players handle the challenge of limited communication?
Evaluation
What types of knocks were most effective?
How did the audience respond to different knocks?
What did players learn about non-verbal communication?
Examples
A policeman knocking on a door at night.
A child knocking hesitantly at a neighbor's door.
A refined messenger knocking formally to deliver news.
