Character Agility C

Exercise Intermediate 15 min 2–2

Description

In this exercise, two players portray distinct characters suggested by the audience, such as a spinster school teacher and a grocery clerk. The players take a moment to internalize their characters in silence before acting.
Once ready, they engage in a scene set in a predetermined or audience-suggested location.

Setup Requirements

Open space for movement; props can be used optionally.

Point of Concentration

Embrace spontaneity in character work.

Side Coaching

  • Encourage players to stay present and open to spontaneous ideas.
  • Remind them to embody their character physically and emotionally.
  • Prompt them to observe how their characters react to the environment.

Points of Observation

  • Watch for how the characters evolve when using random thoughts versus categorized ideas.
  • Notice body language changes as the players embody their characters.
  • Look for emotional engagement and connection to the scene.

Evaluation

  • Did you let random ideas flow, or did you filter your thoughts?
  • How did this impact the life of your character?
  • Was there a noticeable difference in characters based on thought processes?
  • Did these approaches lead to new discoveries in your performance?

Examples

Example characters:
  • A hasty librarian who discovers a hidden talent.
  • A cautious chef who reveals a wild side.
