Costume Piece

Exercise Beginner 15 min 2–10

Description

In this exercise, two or more players select a costume piece such as a cane, derby hat, or scarf. They must then assume the character qualities associated with their selected items. Before beginning, participants agree on the Who, Where, and What of their characters.

Setup Requirements

Various costume pieces (e.g. cane, derby hat, scarf, umbrella).

Point of Concentration

Actors retain character qualities suggested by their costume pieces.

Side Coaching

  • Encourage players to fully embrace their character based on the costume piece.
  • Remind them to stay in character throughout the exercise.
  • Suggest exaggerating certain traits for comedic effect.

Points of Observation

  • Watch for how each player imposes character traits onto their costume piece.
  • Look for clarity in character portrayal.

Evaluation

  • Did the player effectively impose their character onto the costume piece?
  • Did they allow the costume piece to dictate their character?

Examples

  • A player with an umbrella might portray a strict teacher who uses it as a ruler.
  • Someone with a derby hat could become a charming 1920s gentleman.
