Description

This exercise focuses on understanding and developing characters through observation and embodiment. Students will explore the nuances of character traits and learn to express them physically without relying solely on stereotypes.

Setup Requirements

Open space for movement; props can include chairs or canes.

Observing and embodying characteristics.

Side Coaching

  • Encourage players to think beyond clichés.
  • Ask them to explore multiple aspects of a character.
  • Remind them to observe how characters interact with their environment.

Points of Observation

  • Watch for physical expressions of age and personality.
  • Notice the diversity in how movements are portrayed.
  • Look for depth in character interactions with others.

Evaluation

  • What characteristics were most effective in conveying the character?
  • Did the portrayal feel authentic and unique?
  • How can they deepen the physical expression further?

Examples

Examples of characterizations include:
  • An elderly character moving slowly with precision.
  • A young professional who stands tall and speaks confidently.
  • A whimsical character with exaggerated movements and expressions.
