Finding Objects in the Immediate Environment

Exercise Intermediate 30 min 3–10

Description

This exercise involves three or more players engaging in a situational dialogue while discovering objects around them. The setting could be a committee meeting, workplace discussion, or family counsel.
During the meeting, players must handle various objects found in their immediate environment. The key is that they do not plan which objects to use ahead of time; they should allow the environment to influence their actions.

Setup Requirements

A space with various objects in the environment; a table where participants can sit together.

Point of Concentration

Letting the environment work for the players.

Side Coaching

  • Take your time! Let objects appear naturally.
  • Keep the discussion active.
  • Focus on solving the problem at hand.
  • Maintain contact and interaction with each other.

Points of Observation

  • Observe if players are selecting objects from their environment.
  • Check for resistance to using available objects.
  • Look for players inventing items versus discovering them.
  • Monitor the balance between maintaining the meeting and focusing on the point of concentration.

Evaluation

  • Did players discover objects organically or invent them?
  • Did they effectively use each other’s objects?
  • How well did they engage in the dialogue while interacting with the environment?
