Basic Blind

Exercise Beginner 20 min 2–10

Description

In this exercise, teams of two or more participants will wear blindfolds while performing a scene. The exercise emphasizes movement and interaction with props without sight. Teams prepare a simple scene using the elements of Where, Who, and What, ensuring that 'not seeing' is part of the action.
Players will explore a scenario, such as a tea party, where they must hand items to one another using real props in their environment.

Setup Requirements

Blindfolds, a variety of real props and set pieces, a telephone.

Point of Concentration

The blindfolded players are to move about the stage as if they can see.

Side Coaching

  • Justify that groping!
  • Follow through on that action!
  • Find the chair you were looking for!
  • Hang up your hat!
  • Be adventurous!

Points of Observation

  • Observe if actors move naturally while groping for items.
  • Watch for justification of movements based on their Who and What.
  • Check if movements are adventurous or if players hesitate due to anxiety.
  • Ensure players remain blindfolded if they leave the area.
  • Monitor for peeking during the scene.

Evaluation

  • Did they move naturally?
  • Were all movements justified by their scene elements?
  • Was the justification engaging?
  • How adventurous were the players?

Examples

Examples of actions include:
  • Struggling to find a teapot while feeling around.
  • Reaching for a chair and becoming aware of the surrounding space.
  • Passing items to one another while narrating their actions.
