JUMP EMOTION

Exercise Intermediate 30 min 2–6

Description

In this exercise, players will explore radical emotional shifts during a scene. Each player selects a different inner action to incorporate, such as shifting from fear to heroism or love to pity.
Players will work within a specified setting (Where), characters (Who), and scenario (What) to embody these changes effectively, using floorplans to maintain a coherent stage setup.

Setup Requirements

An open performance space with marked floorplans for staging.

Point of Concentration

changing from one emotion (inner action) to another

Side Coaching

  • Encourage clear emotional shifts by emphasizing physicality and vocal changes.
  • Monitor the flow of the scene to help players maintain focus.
  • Utilize floorplans to enhance spatial awareness and dynamics.

Points of Observation

  • Watch for the clarity of emotional transitions.
  • Notice how changes affect character interactions.
  • Evaluate the overall dramatic impact of the shifts.

Evaluation

  • What emotions were most effectively conveyed?
  • How did the emotional transitions enhance the scene?
  • What challenges arose during the shifts?

Examples

Example scenario: Where— a foxhole. Who— two soldiers. What— a dangerous mission. Emotional jumps— #1 anger to understanding; #2 fear to heroism.
As they navigate their perilous situation, soldier #1's anger at soldier #2's cowardice turns to empathy when soldier #2 bravely risks his life to save him.
