Metronome Exercise

Exercise Intermediate 20 min 2–2

Description

In this exercise, two players will explore timing and pacing in a scene. They will perform a chosen scene four times with varying speeds indicated by a metronome. The first three scenes will be at normal, fast, and slow speeds respectively. The fourth scene is performed without the metronome, allowing the actors to recall the rhythm from the first scene.

Setup Requirements

Metronome or someone to beat on a drum.

Point of Concentration

Picking up the beat of the metronome.

Side Coaching

  • Encourage actors to listen carefully to the beat.
  • Remind them to focus on how the pace changes their interactions.
  • Prompt experimentation with extreme speeds.

Points of Observation

  • Observe how actors adjust their performances to the specified tempos.
  • Watch for the physical impact of different speeds on the actors’ energy levels.
  • Take note of character changes that arise from varying the beat.

Evaluation

  • Ask the actors if the metronome enhanced their awareness of stage relationships.
  • Inquire if the beat changed their physical performance.
  • For the audience: Did the timing affect the scene's content and mood?

Examples

  • In a scene of two friends arguing, with the metronome fast, the dialogue may feel frantic.
  • At a slow beat, the same scene could feel more contemplative and drawn out.
