NO MOTION #1

Exercise Intermediate 30 min 2–4

Description

In this exercise, two players create a scene in a chosen environment, such as a restaurant or car. They perform without physical motion, focusing on dialogue and their relationship while engaging in non-verbal communication.
The exercise encourages players to explore their surroundings via dialogue while remaining physically still, allowing the audience to perceive their connection and emotions through subtle expressions.

Setup Requirements

No specific materials are required. An open space for performance is ideal.

Point of Concentration

Players send a message of No Motion to their total organism.

Side Coaching

  • Encourage players to focus on their facial expressions and body language.
  • Remind them that No Motion is not a freeze; it should feel dynamic.
  • Use words like 'silence' or 'quiet' to enhance the non-motion feeling.

Points of Observation

  • Look for how well players create energy through non-verbal cues.
  • Observe their ability to maintain relationships without movement.
  • Note the audience's engagement and understanding of the scene.

Evaluation

  • How effectively did players convey their character relationships?
  • What did the audience take away from the non-verbal cues?
  • Did players find it difficult to stay engaged without physical motion?

Examples

Examples of No Motion might include:
- A character contemplating their age in a diner, staring at the menu without moving.
- Another character nervously fidgeting with a napkin while speaking.
