Physicalizing an Object

Description

This exercise involves a single player who selects an object, either animate or inanimate, and communicates its life or movement to the audience. The goal is to express the essence and action of the object through physicality.

Setup Requirements

A clear space to move around and select an object.

Point of Concentration

giving life or movement to the object

Side Coaching

  • What is the ball doing?
  • Give life to the fish!

Points of Observation

  • Ensure the exercise doesn't feel like watching a sport.
  • Focus on the difference between giving life to the object and merely manipulating it.

Evaluation

  • Did they effectively physicalize the object?
  • Did they show or merely tell the audience about it?

Examples

Examples of objects to animate include:
  • A bowling ball thrown down an alley.
  • Holding a fish.
  • Playing a pinball machine.
  • Flying a kite.
  • Playing with a yo-yo.
