SCENE-ON-SCENE is an advanced improv exercise for teams of four or more students. In this activity, teams divide into two sub-teams. Sub-team A sets up a present-day scene, while Sub-team B interrupts with a flashback or suggestion of another scene.
As they interject, Sub-team B must act out the suggested scene, and when complete, they return to the present scene established by Sub-team A.
Setup Requirements
Space for multiple scenes; chairs or props for the scenes.
Point of Concentration
focus
Side Coaching
Encourage clear transitions between the present and interjected scenes.
Advise students to use props and maintain focus on the current scene.
Remind students to listen actively for cues to enter and exit scenes.
Points of Observation
Watch for how well the teams maintain the flow between different scenes.
Note the use of props and sound effects to enhance storytelling.
Observe the students' attentiveness to each other's performances.
Evaluation
What worked well in the transitions between scenes?
How did the use of props affect the storytelling?
What challenges did you face in coordinating between the two teams?
Examples
Example 1: Two old ladies reminisce about their first sleigh ride. Sub-team B recreates that scene, bringing in details of their youthful adventure.
Example 2: A couple discusses their wedding day, prompting Sub-team B to enact the moment of the proposal.
