This exercise helps actors focus on simple objects, promoting intuitive scene development. The player sits quietly on stage while a teacher-director whispers the name of an object. The goal is to allow concentration on the object to inspire motion and action.
Possible object categories include:
vegetation (growth)
desk
fireplace
window
doors
light
a place to sit
box (container)
weapon
Setup Requirements
A quiet stage space for the player to sit comfortably.
Point of Concentration
on the object, which then sets player in motion.
Side Coaching
Encourage actors to keep their eyes open and view the stage while concentrating.
Remind them not to rush; focus on exhaling and letting the object inspire action.
Look for creativity in how the object is interpreted. Challenge mundane uses.
Points of Observation
Observe if the player remains focused on the object without distraction.
Monitor the evolution of their actions from the object.
Note if the scenes develop into fantasy or dramatic moments versus mundane activities.
Evaluation
To the actor: Did you wait quietly for inspiration or plan verbally before acting?
To the audience: Was the object's use imaginative or ordinary?
Examples
A player focused on a 'fireplace' might evoke dramatic flames rising or simply adjust logs.
A 'box' could inspire a character's treasure or a trap.
