In this exercise, two players portray distinct characters suggested by the audience, such as a spinster school teacher and a grocery clerk. The players take a moment to internalize their characters in silence before acting.
Once ready, they engage in a scene set in a predetermined or audience-suggested location.
Setup Requirements
Open space for movement; props can be used optionally.
Point of Concentration
Embrace spontaneity in character work.
Side Coaching
Encourage players to stay present and open to spontaneous ideas.
Remind them to embody their character physically and emotionally.
Prompt them to observe how their characters react to the environment.
Points of Observation
Watch for how the characters evolve when using random thoughts versus categorized ideas.
Notice body language changes as the players embody their characters.
Look for emotional engagement and connection to the scene.
Evaluation
Did you let random ideas flow, or did you filter your thoughts?
How did this impact the life of your character?
Was there a noticeable difference in characters based on thought processes?
Did these approaches lead to new discoveries in your performance?
